Charlotte and Jonah, knowing that they were in danger and scared that if they refused it would hurt their parents’ chances of getting free, agreed to go with him. Nothing Marty or Wendy said could make their kids come back. That’s why Marty enlisted the help of one Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner). Because just as Mel finishes his speech, Jonah and Charlotte emerge, with Jonah aiming a gun at Mel. The screen cuts to black — and we hear a gun shot before the credits roll. The bulk of the finale is spent following the criminal power couple as they plan to leave the Ozarks with their kids Jonah and Charlotte (Skylar Gaertner and Sofia Hublitz).

Ozark ends with Jonah holding up a shotgun in the direction of the private investigator Mel Sattem before we hear a shot and the screen goes black. It's very much left up to the audience's interpretation what happens next and there are several fan theories about who or what Jonah shoots. An obvious candidate for a spin-off would have been Ruth Langmore, but with her character's bloody end, that would be extremely unlikely. But what is clear, for the first time in a long time, is that the Byrdes are a family united, their collective trauma drawing them together. Jonah, who is now a fully-fledged money launderer himself (like father, like son), appeared keen to take a break from his illegal activities and go "legit" for a while. But whether he'll be able to resist the rush and the significant financial gains that swamp the pocket money of your average 15-year-old remains to be seen. As long as Camila cooperates, she will remain free from prosecution and in charge of the world's biggest cartel – and as far as the rest of the clan is aware, Navarro is alive and communicating his orders via her.

Some of what goes down in the final episode has fans split. Linney says examining the family unit’s ever-shifting dynamics as they’re pushed and pulled in opposite directions across four seasons gave her a particularly tantalizing opportunity. After shooting Javi dead, Ruth initially gets away with the murder as Navarro claims he was the one who did it so he can solidify his power with the cartel. After Clare gives in, Camila arrives to the (now demolished) Langmore trailers to confront Ruth. Rather than trying to escape her fate, Ruth says she's not sorry, and challenges Camila to pull the trigger when she doesn't immediately fire.

In the final scenes, we see Marty and Wendy congregate about their options and realize they have none. After four seasons of wriggling out of tough spots, they're utterly powerless. They're safe, but can do nothing to save Ruth -- which is painful to both them and us.
Once Del was gone, Helen Pierce stepped into the picture to be the effective point man for the interests of the Navarro Drug Cartel. Eventually, Helen entered more of a collaborative partnership with the Byrdes and was a part of the seemingly impossible casino deal that went through. Ruth Langmore's father was mentioned in Ozark in Season 1, but didn't come into the story until Season 2. Ruth's father resented the father/daughter relationship Ruth had with Marty, and was generally a pain in everyone's side including Ruth. Buddy was the Byrde family's terminally ill roommate when they moved to the Ozarks, and stayed with them until his death. Buddy came of use to the Byrdes on many occasions, most notably in connecting Marty to the Kansas City mafia and torching the Snell family's poppy fields.
