Charlotte and Jonah, knowing that they were in danger and scared that if they refused it would hurt their parents’ chances of getting free, agreed to go with him. Nothing Marty or Wendy said could make their kids come back. That’s why Marty enlisted the help of one Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner). Because just as Mel finishes his speech, Jonah and Charlotte emerge, with Jonah aiming a gun at Mel. The screen cuts to black — and we hear a gun shot before the credits roll. The bulk of the finale is spent following the criminal power couple as they plan to leave the Ozarks with their kids Jonah and Charlotte (Skylar Gaertner and Sofia Hublitz).

Ozark ends with Jonah holding up a shotgun in the direction of the private investigator Mel Sattem before we hear a shot and the screen goes black. It's very much left up to the audience's interpretation what happens next and there are several fan theories about who or what Jonah shoots. It is most commonly assumed that Jonah shoots Mel in the finale, which seems like the most likely conclusion. Others have discussed the possibility that he shoots at the cookie jar which contains Ben's ashes or even his mother Wendy. Ruth's death is probably one of the most discussed scenes in the series. Though she was one of the show's most-loved characters, Julia Garner, who plays her, makes a very valid point about her in the bonus show A Farewell To Ozark.
How Does Ozark End for Ruth?
If Ruth is going to get killed off, you know she’s getting killed off in dramatic fashion. I overestimated Ozark’s characters, just as I overestimated the show’s arc toward resolution. No matter how much we yearn for freedom, no one escapes unscathed—if they manage to escape at all.
Who’s in Charge of the Navarro Cartel?
Cursed at first by poverty, then criminality and then eventually death. Apart from Three, Ruth has lost almost all of her family in some way or another and yet when she chooses to clear her record, she does it just to build a mansion on the place she perviously lived. What's that parable about a man who built his house on sand? Added to that, when Marty suggests she change her name and just leave Ozark entirely, she tells him that she likes her name... The name which is eventually given up and leads to her murder.
Who Killed Damari Carter? Missing Boy Found Dead in Duffle Bag

Mason kidnaps Wendy, and while Marty negotiated an impossible deal for Zeke to return to him, Mason was suspicious. His paranoia resulted in him trying to kill Marty and Wendy, which ultimately led Marty to accidentally shoot Mason through the neck. The Byrdes took custody of Zeke, but were forced to give custody to Darlene Snell later. A righteous preacher in Ozark Season 1, Mason Young learned the hard way what happens when rejecting an offer from dangerous people. His pregnant wife was brutally murdered by the Snells shortly after they delivered his son Zeke. The trauma from the event drove Mason from the Ozarks, only to become a homeless preacher on street corners.

An obvious candidate for a spin-off would have been Ruth Langmore, but with her character's bloody end, that would be extremely unlikely. But what is clear, for the first time in a long time, is that the Byrdes are a family united, their collective trauma drawing them together. Jonah, who is now a fully-fledged money launderer himself (like father, like son), appeared keen to take a break from his illegal activities and go "legit" for a while. But whether he'll be able to resist the rush and the significant financial gains that swamp the pocket money of your average 15-year-old remains to be seen. As long as Camila cooperates, she will remain free from prosecution and in charge of the world's biggest cartel – and as far as the rest of the clan is aware, Navarro is alive and communicating his orders via her.
Are the Byrdes free of the cartel?
Does Wendy still think she’s doing all of this for her family? We’re playing with Wendy’s sanity quite a bit, especially in the [final] seven [episodes]. I think she really does believe she wants to do good. But, at the same, she’s done so much bad that she has to double and triple down on it to even believe that little kernel [of truth].

The family's event goes off without a hitch, apart from Marty and Wendy knowing that Ruth is likely dead. They return home as united front and the kids disperse. Marty and Wendy find private investigator Mel in their garden holding Ben's ashes.

Some of what goes down in the final episode has fans split. Linney says examining the family unit’s ever-shifting dynamics as they’re pushed and pulled in opposite directions across four seasons gave her a particularly tantalizing opportunity. After shooting Javi dead, Ruth initially gets away with the murder as Navarro claims he was the one who did it so he can solidify his power with the cartel. After Clare gives in, Camila arrives to the (now demolished) Langmore trailers to confront Ruth. Rather than trying to escape her fate, Ruth says she's not sorry, and challenges Camila to pull the trigger when she doesn't immediately fire.
Jonah pulls the trigger, the screen cuts to black, and a gunshot is heard—meaning that the Byrdes have miraculously survived Ozark’s deadly obstacle path. Working with the FBI, Marty, Wendy, and Camila arranged for Omar to be transported to a different prison. But in the middle of this transfer, one of the guards murdered his coworker, gave Omar a gun filled with blanks, and released him. To the untrained eye, it looked like Omar Navarro murdered one of his escorts before getting shot mid-escape. Omar Navarro is the first major character to die in Ozark’s finale.

In the final scenes, we see Marty and Wendy congregate about their options and realize they have none. After four seasons of wriggling out of tough spots, they're utterly powerless. They're safe, but can do nothing to save Ruth -- which is painful to both them and us.
Once Del was gone, Helen Pierce stepped into the picture to be the effective point man for the interests of the Navarro Drug Cartel. Eventually, Helen entered more of a collaborative partnership with the Byrdes and was a part of the seemingly impossible casino deal that went through. Ruth Langmore's father was mentioned in Ozark in Season 1, but didn't come into the story until Season 2. Ruth's father resented the father/daughter relationship Ruth had with Marty, and was generally a pain in everyone's side including Ruth. Buddy was the Byrde family's terminally ill roommate when they moved to the Ozarks, and stayed with them until his death. Buddy came of use to the Byrdes on many occasions, most notably in connecting Marty to the Kansas City mafia and torching the Snell family's poppy fields.
